Rankings Reworked

walden10

Following World Snooker’s decision to change the ranking events point tariff for next season, for a bit of fun I have worked out how the top 16 on the one-year list for last season would have fared had the new points system been in place last year. Entirely pointless but click below to read out how my revised list looks…

The Top 16 on the 2008/9 one-year list. Click here to view the full list:

RANK NAME 2008/2009 POINTS

1

John Higgins MBE

31000

2

Allister Carter

3

Ronnie O’Sullivan

4

5

22825

6

14

15

16

How they would change had the now increased points systems for four of the then eight events been in operation:

As you can see, the main beneficiaries would be those who did well in the events over in China, notably Ricky Walden, Peter Ebdon, Ronnie O’Sullivan and Ryan Day, while the big loser would be Mark Allen who enjoyed his best runs in the ‘other’ events.

Would this have been a fairer assessment of how last season unfolded or do you think that the actual list is more justifiable?

Im totally confused. Any points system has to be stuck with consistently for it to serve a legitimate purpose. Given the changes it is clear it will change again which makes the whole thing a total nightmare for the game. I am more and more convinced they are trying to make the game more popular overseas and get the stars to perform properly so to speak out there. Long term plan or desperation???

I agree with dannyboy. If next season (2010/11) we recover two ranking tournaments, will we change the rankings again? It seems World Snooker is trying to do many things lately, let’s see if it’s for the benefit of the game.

On the other, I think it’s positive to give more points to the Chinese events. They are the future, they have the money. I don’t want the WC there, but it’s the biggest snooker market right now and they must be rewarded.

How is it positive to give the China event more points, yet leave the BEST attended tournament by far, with the exception of the WC and The Masters languishing at the bottom of the rankings. Once again the World Snooker Association shows it’s total ineptness in all matters snooker. They have truly run this great sport into the ground and it’s sad to watch.
