Having qualified for the venue stages of a ranking event for the first time in his fledgling career, Scotland’s Anthony McGill has been talking to The Press and Journal about his hopes for the tournament…
McGill told The Press and Journal:
“I’ve got the Dutchman (Mario Wehrmann) to play first.
“I’ve never played him, I don’t know anything about him, but he must be a decent player.
“But I’m determined to win and it’s a big incentive to play someone of the calibre of Mark Williams who is a great snooker player.
“Mark fell away for a wee while, but he’s right up there now and I will have to be at my best if I am going to stand a chance of beating him.
“I’ve had some good results. This is the first time I have qualified for the final stages of a major tournament and I see it as a good achievement considering I’ve not been a professional all that long.
“If I can get past the Dutch player I won’t dread playing Mark. It would be something to look forward to.”
A player who I first highlighted back in February 2009, Anthony has indeed enjoyed a strong start to his first professional season, moving up into the top 64 of the rankings already. If he can make it through to play Mark, hopefully he will be able to give a good account of himself and show everyone the promise that he has, though winning the match will be a tall order.
Could he find himself inside of the top 48 by the time the World Championship draw is made?
