Another trophy for Williams?

Day two of this week’s PTC finals saw the start of the last 16 phase and on the evidence of his performance against Anthony Hamilton tonight, Welshman Mark Williams will be a tough man to beat…

PTC Finals: Day Two Results

Last 24

Martin Gould 4-0 Jamie Jones
Andrew Higginson 4-1 Jack Lisowski

Last 16

Shaun Murphy 4-2 Ricky Walden
Matthew Stevens 4-1 Dominic Dale
Mark Williams 4-0 Anthony Hamilton

Rounding off the first round this morning with victories were Martin Gould and Andrew Higginson, clear winners against Jamie Jones and Jack Lisowski respectively. For Martin the result is a continuation of his good form displayed against Robert Milkins during last week’s World Championship qualifiers and boosts his bid for a year-end top 16 place.

For Andrew meanwhile the result is not likely to significantly affect his ranking between now and the end of the season but it is an impressive result bearing in mind the disappointment that he must have felt following his World Championship defeat to Welshman Andrew Pagett last week.

Speaking of the Welsh players, both Matthew Stevens and Mark Williams came through their last 16 matches tonight to book their places in the quarter-finals of this tournament. Williams in particular was impressive, two century breaks including a quickfire tournament high of 143 in the final frame of his win against Anthony Hamilton rounding off the night in style.

For Anthony though I expect that he will just be glad to see the season come to an end if his interview on the World Snooker website yesterday is anything to go by…
