Whispering Ted Lowe Passes Away Aged 90

Sad news today from the Crucible as it is being reported that former BBC lead commentator ‘whispering’ Ted Lowe has passed away at the age of 90.

The original voice of snooker to fans over the age of 30, Ted retired from commentating following the 1996 World Championship final won by Stephen Hendry, though he did briefly re-enter the box during the 2005 Crucible final which commemorated 30 years of sponsorship of the event by Embassy.

I met him briefly during that event when he signed a photo for me, signing it as always with the words ‘Good Luck, Ted Lowe’ which was a nice touch.

Let’s hope that John and Judd put on a real show today, it would certainly be fitting.

You can read an article written about him last year by Snooker Scene’s David Hendon here.

Feel free to leave any tributes to Ted below.
