Yes it was Neil Robertson who won through tonight to join John Higgins, Stephen Maguire, Judd Trump and Marco Fu in the winner’s group, one that interestingly is almost entirely made of of players who were involved in the Premier League earlier this season!
Following an impressive performance in the Group Stage which saw him win four of his six matches played, Neil saw off the challenge of Mark Williams in his semi-final without the loss of a frame before repeating the trick against Stoke’s Jamie Cope in the final.
Following day one of the Group yesterday it was Peter Ebdon who headed the table with three wins from four but today yielded no joy as he lost his remaining two group matches before being brushed aside 3-0 by Cope in his semi-final. Up until the final Jamie appeared to be the form player as he had not only topped the group but also recorded four centuries in the process. Robertson was however one of the players who had defeated him in the group stage earlier on in the day and perhaps this was still fresh in his mind as he saw the Australian progress.
It had at least been a better day for Jamie than Dave Harold who like last year struggled in the competition and was able to win just one match, while Ricky Walden also saw his participation in the Championship League come to an end as he finished up sixth.
