Despite suffering from jet lag following his exploits over in Beijing as part of the ‘Ding v Hendry’ exhibition event, Mark Allen booked his place in the winner’s group of the Championship with a 3-0 victory over Peter Ebdon tonight.
Peter had been in excellent form during the group stage of the event and with a 144 break during his semi-final victory over Mark Williams looked like he would maintain this standard through to the final. Perhaps ominously however, Mark was one of two players to defeat Peter during the group stage and having recorded an excellent victory himself against Joe Swail in his semi-final, took the final thanks in part to breaks of 69 and 56.
While Ebdon will be understandably disappointed, he will no doubt be encouraged by his form this week and will be back for Group Seven of the competition, as will Mark Williams, Joe Swail and Jamie Cope.
Barry Hawkins and Stuart Bingham though were not so successful, winning just three matches between them and crashing out of the competition as a result.
