While the Championship League today takes centre stage, this past Sunday was an interesting one as both Kyren Wilson and Stephen Lee won events…
First up, Kyren Wilson lived up to his status as the sole remaining current professional to make it through to the last eight of the first event of the new Q-School Preparation Series in Gloucester by defeating Ben Harrison to win the competition.
Having lost just one frame on Saturday, Kyren marched serenely on yesterday, defeating Fraser Patrick 4-0 in his quarter-final before seeing off Sam Baird, a professional last season don’t forget, again without the loss of a frame, this time 5-0. Harrison meanwhile had a much tougher ride, being taken to deciders by both Michael Wild and Mitchell Mann during what was an arduous run to the final.
Whether or not the extra seven frames played by Harrison earlier in the day to reach the final had any effect I don’t know but ultimately it was to be Kyren’s day, a 5-3 victory enough to take the top prize of a fully paid place at this season’s upcoming Q School should he not manage to maintain his professional status as of right.

Meanwhile, about as far away from the Southwest Snooker Academy as you can get, former On Q Promotions player Stephen Lee took victory in the CCI Open Invitational Snooker Tournament, defeating Jimmy White (who tweeted the story on Twitter), by a 10-7 scoreline in the final.
There were no other professionals involved by Stephen did also have to defeat Aditya Mehta along the way, a useful player as Stephen Maguire will testify to having lost to him in the PTC earlier this year.
