Mark Selby 4-3 Graeme Dott
76-51 (53), 22-84, 62-31, 0-113 (106), 30-52, 82-1 (72), 90-0 (90)
From the off, tonight’s final in Munich proved to be a real battle, between two players who have enjoyed a number of titanic tussles over the years, not least their World Championship semi-final at the Crucible back in 2010.
As Graeme Dott hit the front at 3-2, it looked as though the Scot was closing in on his first professional title since the 2007 China Open, particularly with Mark Selby’s pot success down at 77%, albeit this was a misleading figure given the attritional nature of the action up to that point.
The best however was still to come from the world number one, a break of 72 drawing him level, before he secured victory with an excellent break of 90 in the decider.
For Mark it is not the biggest title that he will win this season, but nevertheless it is another €12,000 in the bank, as well as 2,000 ranking points to consolidate his position at the head of the rankings. Mark also finishes at the top of the PTC Order of Merit, underlying his status as the one to beat at the moment, with the Masters fast-approaching.
Credit too to Graeme Dott, who at his press conference following his recent defeat at the UK Championship was particularly dissatisfied with the state of his game, but early in 2013 looks to have found some form again. With the second half of the season still to come, hopefully he will be able to kick on and challenge for silverware during the rest of the campaign.
Elsewhere, the event saw good runs for the likes of Ben Woollaston, Tian Pengfei and Kurt Maflin, while Thai youngster Thanawat Tirapongpaiboon continued his impressive recent form with another quarter-final run.
Rod Lawler again showed that his early season form was not a flash in the pan, reaching another semi-final, while Martin Gould also impressed earlier in the tournament, before going out to Tian.
Next step, Crondon Park for the start of this season’s Championship League.
