Pontin’s Spring Open 2009
The main tournament saw a number of entrants from both the main tour and the PIOS ranks battle it out for the £4,000 top prize but in the end it was the class of Stuart Bingham that ultimately shone through to win the event for a second successive year in Prestatyn.
Though his final victory over fellow professional Matt Couch was somewhat one-sided (5-1), he had a couple of very interesting matches early on against Paul Hunter Scholar Jack Lisowski and Bolton’s Craig Steadman. Having finally made it onto the main tour for next season, it was a chance for Craig to get some early experience against a top professional at Pontin’s and though he could not quite win, he did push him to a seventh and deciding frame which is surely a good sign for him.
Pontin’s U-16 Cup
The under-16’s title went to Jamie Clark who managed to defeat Gateshead’s Elliot Slessor to take home the £200 prize. Promising young Welshman Jak Jones also reached the latter stages of the event but could do nothing to stop Clark in the semi-finals as he went through by a 2-1 scoreline.
Pontin’s U-20 Cup
Having done well in the main competition Jack Lisowski managed to complete a good week’s work by defeating Mitchell Mann, himself a former event winner here, to take the under-20 event and a £300 prize.You can read a profile of young Lisowski here at the Eurosport website.
Pontin’s 20-40’s Trophy
Although the prize fund for the 20-40’s Trophy was significantly lower than the main event, there was still a high quality field featuring a number of current or former main tour players. Eventually though it was won by Sean Bullock and having had to beat Matt Selt and Matt Couch in order to do so, it looks like he certainly deserved it.
Pontin’s Over 40’s & Over 60’s Trophies
Having already taken the over 40’s trophy it looked like Barry Stark would complete a double victory by taking the over 60’s competition as well but in the end he was to fall at the semi-final stage as he lost out to Robert McCabe. Unfortunately for him though he could not complete the job in the final as Mike Faulkner came through to take the title.
