As well as being a remarkable achievement in its own right, Ali Carter’s victory at the recent Paul Hunter Classic, also secured him a place in the Champion of Champions event for the third successive year.

Champion of Champions 2014: First Two Groups Confirmed

With the 2014 Champion of Champions set to get underway at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry on Monday 3rd November, the players and fixtures for the first two groups can be named.

Monday 3rd, Group 3 (first match at 1.00pm)

Ding Junhui (1) v Dominic Dale

Barry Hawkins (2) v John Higgins

Tuesday 4th, Group 2 (first match at 1.00pm)

Mark Selby (1) v Steve Davis

Judd Trump (2) v Stephen Maguire

The majority of the field have been competing in the International Championship in Chengdu, China this week and the Wednesday and Friday groups will be named as that tournament enters its closing stages. Ronnie O’Sullivan (Wednesday) and Neil Robertson (Friday) are already seeded into those groups.

With a £270,000 prize fund, including £100,000 for the ultimate winner, the Champion of Champions will be screened live throughout on ITV4 in the UK.

Should Carter Be Sent To Coventry?

Following his fairy tale victory at the invitational General Cup tournament in Hong Kong yesterday, there has been some debate amongst snooker fans on Twitter as to whether Ali Carter should be awarded a place in next month’s invitational Champion of Champions event, set to be staged at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

On the face of it, the argument would appear to simply be one of sentiment against the rules, however looking beyond the surface there is perhaps another argument to be had, one already discussed here at PSB last month…

Champion of Champions 2014: The Qualifiers So Far

While Stephen Maguire today became a world champion with victory at the Sangsom Six Red World Championship, one further bonus from winning the event is that he became the eleventh player to secure his place in the 2014 edition of the invitational Champion of Champions tournament, set to be staged in Coventry this November.
