Ricky Walden’s win at the International Championship today yesterday brought us to the third mid-season seedings revision of the 2014/15 season, with Mark Selby retaining his spot at number one, but with points to defend at the upcoming UK Championship, he faces a battle if he is going to stay there.

It might only be early July, but today saw the first mid-season seedings revision of 2014/15, following Judd Trump’s victory at the Australian Goldfields Open in Bendigo.
This list will now be used to determine the seedings for September’s Shanghai Masters, which remains one of three events that will not be staged under the increasingly common flat draw structure.

For those of us who like to keep an eye on all things rankings related, during each season there are usually a number of themes to follow just from a look at the various ranking lists.
For example a couple of seasons ago, it was only a matter of time before Judd Trump became number one, given the relative lack of points that he was defending compared to those above him, while last season it was the likes of Neil Robertson and Ding Junhui who were well placed to climb to the top of the list due to lesser performances two years previously.
This year has of course seen a change to a prize-money based ranking list, but the premise of a two-year rolling system remains the same and so below I take a look at a few themes that I will be following as the season progresses.

Yesterday saw the conclusion of five days of qualifying matches in Gloucester for the 2014 Wuxi Classic and there was a mix of strong wins for the established names, as well as shocks at the South West Snooker Academy.

So it begins, tomorrow will see the start of the 2014 World Championship qualifiers and with them, the climax of the race for main tour places, which I have been talking about so much during the past few months.
Though you can view my extended player-by-player guide to tour survival here, this then is the post that will be updated throughout this week’s matches, making focusing on those which could prove key to certain players hopes of remaining on the main tour for at least another season…
With just two tournaments still to be played this season and both the European and Asian Orders of Merit now set, the battle for main tour places next season is now down to the two final events, the China Open and World Championship.

After last week saw group victories for Shaun Murphy and Martin Gould in the latest matches of the 2014 Championship League, today saw a return to ranking event action with the start of the China Open qualifiers in Gloucester.
Running until Tuesday evening, the event will determine which of the 64 players will be on the flight to Beijing for the final tournament ahead of the season-ending World Championship in April…
Following Neil Robertson’s victory at the UK Championship, the snooker circuit was back in action this week at the Barnsley Metrodome for the final matches of 2013, as the round of 128 of the German Masters and Haikou World Open events were played out.
