Former main tour professional Alex Borg has won the first ranking event of the Maltese season with a 5-0 victory over 18-year-old Thurston Grixti yesterday.
A brief match report can be found here on di-ve.com:
Borg took a 4-0 lead going into the mid-session interval, constructing breaks of 43, and two of 93. On the resumption Borg quickly won the fifth frame with a break of 53 for a 5-0.
Frame scores, breaks in brackets: 78-14, 80(43)-3, 93(93)-1, 126(93)-8, 75(53)-19.
The Final was controlled by referee Frans Bugeja.
At the end of the match, Joe Caruana Curran, President of the Malta Billiards & Snooker Association presented the trophies to the finalists.
On the MBSA provisional ranking list, Borg has now extended his lead to 2800 points followed by Duncan Bezzina with 2000 and Simon Zammit with 1950 points.
With the fourth event of the PIOS coming up this week and well as the World Amateur Championship in Austria at the end of the month, this is a good start to what will be a busy period in Alex’s season.
Although (as the name of the blog would suggest), my focus is on professional snooker, I will be putting up a preview of the World Amateur Championship in the next day or two and taking a look back at some former winners of the event.
