Ken Doherty 5-3 Mark Selby
Former world champion Ken Doherty caused something of an upset in today’s first semi-final as he beat the world number four Mark Selby 5-3.
Ken has been struggling to find his best form this season so it is nice to see him record a very impressive win over a top player and hopefully this will give him the confidence boost that he needs to sort his season out.
Early on it looked like Ken would have it all his own way as he raced into a 3-0 lead, but typically Selby fought back well and took the next three to bring himself level. Ken has enough experienced not to be flustered at such a situation however and edged ahead at 4-3, before producing his best break of the match to seal the win.
Ken Doherty 5-3 Mark Selby 90-7, 64-22, 74-73(70), 5-110(102), 23-69, 35-69(44), 61-36, 119(79)-1
Ding Junhui 5-1 Steve Davis
In the semi-final Ken will meet Ding Junhui, a man who in the last couple of weeks is finally showing some signs of a return to form and continued that with a 5-1 win over Steve Davis.
Like in the first match, one player got off to much the better start as Davis had no answer for Ding’s heavy scoring. At least Steve managed to avoid his second whitewash in four days and he took frame five to make it 4-1, but the result seemed inevitable now as Ding wrapped it up with his first century of the weekend.
It will be interesting to see if Ding really is coming back into form as although this is an invitational event, he is playing well and he did look to be in good shape during the Grand Prix recently. He is not yet playing as he was during 2005/6, but a few wins will be sure to give his confidence a much needed boost…
