Day Two of the World Open 2010 qualifiers is now at an end and those through to the third round include Matt Couch who was a double winner today…
The day began with the final eight matches of the first round and like yesterday there were few shocks, the likes of Matt Couch, Anthony McGill, Alfie Burden, Liu Song and Simon Bedford all progressing without being run overly close.
Couch was not finished there however as he followed up that victory with another excellent 3-0 success against former World Championship semi-finalist Ian McCulloch to set up a third round tie with Liu Song, who also recorded an impressive victory, this time against Barry Pinches.
Jimmy White fans will be pleased to hear that the former UK champion is safely through to the third qualifying round following a 3-0 victory against Irishman Michael Judge. Jimmy’s final match will now face Paul Davison for a place in the last 32, although that match will be held over until the venue stage in Glasgow next month.
Another match to be held over will be that between Stephen Hendry and Bjorn Haneveer after the latter came through against Joe Swail today, despite the Welsh Open finalist of 2009 making a 139 along the way.
There were a few other surprising results today, Adrian Gunnell defeating Jamie Burnett, James McBain seeing off Anthony Hamilton and Thai youngster Thepchaiya un-Nooh seeing off Leeds’ Peter Lines without the loss of a frame. Fergal O’Brien was however able to edge over the line against promising youngster Liam Highfield to set up a match with Welshman Dominic Dale.
